WHAT MADE YOU ATTEND YOUR HBCU?
HBCU is embedded in my lineage. From a young girl matriculating thru school, I was intrigued by history and culture. Having the opportunity to connect to a unique rich culture and experience at an HBCU sets the foundation to embrace rich history and academia. I knew attending a HBCU would give me the priceless cultural experience to solidify my foundation. The nurturing experience provided allows you the space to stretch and grow mentally and emotionally. Most of all, it’s gave me the fortitude to be the authentic me.
WHAT DID YOU LEARN DURING YOUR TIME A YOUR COLLEGE?
I learned identity, strength, tenacity, resilience and grace. Gleaning from history and culture taught me how to not only face obstacles but to survive and conquer them. The strategies, structure and community I was able to learn through my years matriculating thru my HBCU journey at both institutions, have shaped me to be the powerful and confident woman I am today. It ignited a level a strength in me that failure is never an option.
HOW DID YOUR HBCU EFFECT YOUR LIFE?
When I entered my first HBCU, I was a young woman trying to figure out life. I honestly didn’t know what my next steps in life would be. The unique learning experience I had at Coppin State University helped me embrace the total me. The diversity presented in class and campus life helped me to appreciate my uniqueness and my heritage. Being infused with the richness of culture and history made it easy to select another HBCU when it was time to complete my doctoral studies. The unmatched learning experience allowed me to become the strong black woman I am today. It strengthened me to withstand any obstacle that I come up against. Knowing the stock that I come from, fuels me to go after and achieve every goal, dream and vision I have.
