WHAT MADE YOU ATTEND YOUR HBCU?
I opened the letter addressed to Sharon J. Burch from Tuskegee University. It was an award offer for the “Distinguished Presidential Scholarship.” This for sure was my destiny because I was considering joining the military to assist with paying for college. In addition, I was also researching occupational therapy at Historically Black Colleges and Universities and not many that offered the program. With these two affirmations, my decision was made to attend the prestigious Tuskegee University.
WHAT DID YOU LEARN DURING YOUR TIME A YOUR COLLEGE?
As an alumna of Tuskegee University, I’ve learned the power of cultural diversity and the enriching experiences afforded to me. These experiences have helped to shape my career and life goals overall which includes but not limited to motivating me to pursue entrepreneurship, engaging more within my community, and mentoring to younger individuals.
WHAT WAS YOUR DECISION TO PLEDGE DELTA SIGMA THETA SORORITY INC?
My decision to pledge Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was definitely a mere honor and pleasure because I am the first woman in my family to pledge a sorority. I also wanted to be a part of an organization that had a rich history of serving the community which has definitely motivated me to serve the communities of Macon and Bullock Counties to my fullest potential. In addition, it had have provided a foundation for Legacy to continue within in my family starting with my beautiful daughter.
HOW DID YOUR HBCU EFFECT YOUR LIFE?
Attending Tuskegee university impacted my life in a very special way. I always have a sense of belonging and spiritual connection whenever I visit the campus. I developed a deep appreciation for the rich history and culture in Tuskegee, Alabama. The ultimate gain was an extended Tuskegee University Family for a lifetime.
SHARE 3 OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL THING YOU HAVE DONE SINCE LEAVING COLLEGE?
Since graduating from Tuskegee University, I have accomplished some wonderful things. (1) I took a leap of faith in 2017 and became an entrepreneur as a solo occupational therapist working in one school district. Presently, I have six employees and six school districts. (2) I opened my occupational therapy clinic in 2022. (3) Being a woman of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is definitely an endeavor that I always hold as the ultimate success in my life.
WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE A YOUNG DELTA SIGMA THETA?
Being a woman of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is much more than wearing the paraphernalia or the colors. It’s definitely an honor and mere pleasure to be a part of a sisterhood that serves the community. So take this opportunity to put your best heels forward as out 22 founders have done.
WHAT IS NEXT FOR YOU WITH IN 5 YEARS?
Prayerfully in five years, I would like to obtain my doctorate, expand my brand, Play Learn Live Therapy, Inc., and open a school for students with special needs.
