Teisha Pessoa Brown is a Southern Bell at heart. Born and raised in Montgomery, Alabama, she is a proud graduate of Sidney Lanier High School. Excited about education and teaching, Teisha pursued her Bachelor of Science Degree in English at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee. A champion for higher education, Teisha went on to complete her Master’s Degree in Adult Education at Troy University in Montgomery, Alabama. Teisha also received her Education Specialist Degree from Northcentral University and is currently pursuing her Doctorate Degree in Higher Education and Leadership at Northcentral University as well.
Teisha has always been an advocate for patient care, especially in minority communities. She is the eldest daughter of Drs. Winston and Vilma Pessoa. Her parents have been pillars in the medical and dental community for over 40 years. As their Office Manager, Teisha observed their love for and dedication to their patients and followed in their footsteps.
After retirement, her mom was missed so much by her patients that Teisha decided to write a children’s book about her entitled “Because of YOU.” Her mom’s story is one of admiration and aspiration. Representation matters, and this book allows little girls of color in particular to see themselves in the beautifully detailed illustrations.
As a first time author, I am overjoyed. There is no greater thrill than seeing your words in print ready for the world to read! I still remember my mom’s reaction when I presented her with a copy of the book, the picture was priceless. Talk about pride and tears of joy. You really can’t put that emotion into words.
Whether I sell 10 books or 10,000, “Because of YOU” is a true testament to many things, mainly determination. I must and I will carry on my mom’s legacy.
“Because of YOU” is receiving rave reviews online and statewide support for its empowering message to young girls. This is a great read and an inspirational story of how one person can truly make a difference. Working with young readers, Teisha has seen “Because of YOU” inspire young people to go from being afraid of the doctor to wanting to be a Doctor.
