WHAT MADE YOU ATTEND YOUR HBCU?
Miles College, home of the Golden Bears just felt like home! Originally from Brooklyn, New York I felt that this would be a great atmosphere conducive for learning, and growth! Every processor, I encountered was so sincere, loving and truly had my best interest at heart. I knew at that moment, Miles College would be the right selection for me. I personally wanted to take on a challenge, of opening my mind and heart to new things. Miles College forever changed my life. Day after day, being inspired by those around me, that also looked like me, gave me the fuel I needed to strive for greatness. My professors always believed in me, even at times when I didn’t believe in myself. I couldn’t be more proud of the woman I became during my matriculation at this wonderful institution. I credit Miles College for having all the necessary tools and resources to ensure students future success!
WHAT DID YOU LEARN DURING YOUR TIME A YOUR COLLEGE?
My Bachelors degree is in Early childhood education. The education division, was like a family within itself. During study time I would find myself, meeting with my advisors whom always gave me a positive perspective on life as an educator. I learned that in order to become successful in my career path that it will require me to always persevere and strive for being my best self. I love the fact that I was challenged during internship by being on assignments that i had no experience. These challenges equipped me for what my future would later on become as an educator. Educators have a vital role in society. No matter what challenge arises, having a true heart and passion for what you do trumps it all! I can remember back during my junior year of college, and running for Miss Junior. I was shown so much love and support and ultimately it led to me earning the title of my class . Learning at Miles is more than just curriculum based, but in fact teaching life lessons that can enhance your overall leadership capabilities. At Miles College, a leader was born, and that leader I later on discovered was me!
HOW DID YOUR HBCU EFFECT YOUR LIFE?
Being a HBCU graduate has impacted my life in so many ways! I am reminded that my ancestors worked so hard to provide opportunities for which I am so grateful. They never once gave up on their dreams and no matter how difficult the road may appear, there’s always light at the end of the tunnel. It is prevalent to always surround yourself around God fearing individuals. There was never a moment that I felt deserted on an island. I knew I could lean on my fellow brother or sister for mutual support and guidance. There is no other experience like an HBCU experience! It’s life changing, it’s a Godsend blessing. I couldn’t be more appreciative of all who cheered me on and wanted to see me Win!
SHARE 3 OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL THING YOU HAVE DONE SINCE LEAVING COLLEGE?
Upon graduation, I became an early childhood educator! I learned the essentials of what would later on prepare me for my long term career path as a business owner. Secondly, I became an Agent Aspirant with State Farm. During this time, I had a chance to truly learn the insurance industry and acquire the business acumen to run my own office. I became one of the top producers in our state. During this time, I felt I was equipped for becoming an Agency owner. In 2019, I started my own State Farm office! To date, I have earned numerous awards and recognition from the company. Ultimately becoming a top 1% agent out of the 19,000 agents nationwide. I give 110% in all that I do and it is paying off for me. In my role, I have developed four other future leaders in the industry. It became more and more apparent what my calling in life was to lead. As an insurance agent I’m able to truly make a difference in my community. When I meet with my policy holders, they all thank me for being the difference in their insurance purchasing decision. It makes my heart happy to be a major part of peoples lives! Also, my agency host several events throughout the year. Our events include our annual Easter Egg community block party, Back to School giveaway, breast cancer awareness, Christmas gala and much more! My fulfillment in business is knowing that I have put a smile on someone else’s face. In a world of so much negativity it feels encouraging to know my agency makes a difference.
WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE OTHER ENTERPRENUERS?
The best advice I would give any entrepreneur is to never give up. My favorite scripture is found in James 4:2-3, “You do not have because you do not ask God. Create a business plan, detailing out your personal goals. Never put any limitations to what it is you wish to accomplish. Pray and ask God for wisdom and guidance at all times. During challenging times in your business journey, God gives us the vision, and we in turn limit what we can and will do with it. I challenge all entrepreneurs to dream big! Dream as if no one is watching you, take that leap of faith, shoot for the stars, go above and beyond, always put your goals in writing. A lesson I learned in leadership is you must realize that you are a human being. All human beings have a lid or a stopping point. It is important that you develop out a team that enables you to lift that lid and have no closed caps on success. Leadership is not about if you win or lose, it’s about what value you bring. Always focus on what value you bring to someone else’s life and situation! Your blessings will come!
WHAT IS NEXT FOR YOU WITH IN 5 YEARS?
In the next five years, I see myself owning multiple operations. My goal is to continuously give back through community engagement. I want to set the bar so high in our industry that it creates a new meaning to the experience we provide for our policy holders!
