WHAT HBCU YOU ATTEND?

Hampton University & Texas Southern

WHAT MADE YOU ATTEND YOUR HBCU?

I was a part of a college tour that went to Hampton to visit. I was so impressed by the university and the students. I also had relatives and friends from my hometown of Paterson, New Jersey who also attended. I so enjoyed the tour and Homecoming weekend, that I made the decision that I wanted to attend Hampton.

It was at Hampton that a classmate told me about Texas Southern University, Thurgood Marshall School of Law. So when the time came for me to apply to law school, TMSL was on the list because my classmate had told me so much about it.

WHAT DID YOU LEARN DURING YOUR TIME A YOUR COLLEGE?

I learned how to be an adult. Taking responsibility for my actions, managing my time, navigating relationships, facing obstacles and challenges – and how to address and resolve issues. Also, along the way, I learned about business and marketing as I was a marketing major.

WHAT WAS YOUR DECISION TO PLEDGE DELTA SIGMA THETA INC?

I read “In Search of Sisterhood” and it was the detail about how the Founders sought to serve that African American community at large in a way that at the time was novel and innovative that really resonated with me. I am very much interested in entities in society that affect our everyday lives.

HOW DID YOUR HBCU EFFECT YOUR LIFE?

It gave me the foundation I needed to be successful in life. I needed to be around people who looked like me and shared many of the same life experiences, have the intestinal fortitude to work, learn and grow. I also came away with friendships and experiences that I would not trade my four (4) years at Hampton for the world.

At TMSL, although a professional school, I formed bonds there as well, along with the foundational and technical skill set acquired to practice law with opportunity to expand into other areas.
