WHAT HBCU YOU ATTEND?
Lane College
WHAT MADE YOU ATTEND YOUR HBCU?
I attended my HBCU because it’s a school under my denomination, Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME), and my grandmother insisted. My Mom was hesitant because she is extremely overprotective (still) and didn’t want me 6 hours away from her at the time.
WHAT DID YOU LEARN DURING YOUR TIME A YOUR COLLEGE?
During my time at Lane College, I learned a lot about myself as a young black woman. I gained a sense of cultural that wasn’t influenced by my family. I was able to navigate my cultural as a young woman and gained a sense of who I was through that. Although the journey wasn’t always easy during my 4 years, it was impactful. The lessons learned from our beloved President, The Late Dr Wesley Cornelius McClure and our Dorm Mother, Ms Evelyn Craft will stick with me forever. They were strict like my Mother but that is what we needed because it protected us from surrounding dangers and also ourselves.
WHAT WAS YOUR DECISION TO PLEDGE DELTA SIGMA THETA INC?
I have known since I was 9 years old that I was going to be a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated. My Aunt Rochelle crossed in 1990 at Southern University Alpha Tau Chapter and just seeing what the sorority represented and how the sisterhood amongst her chapter was, sold me from day one. So growing up, that image and representation stayed in my mind. So when 2002 approached and the opportunity for me to make the decision, I was blessed to be able to crossover with my line sisters under Delta Sigma Theta Beta Chi’s chapter.
HOW DID YOUR HBCU EFFECT YOUR LIFE?
My HBCU affected my life by giving me a sense of pride of my culture. Being around everyone that looks like you, going through the things you go through, and also striving for excellence made me extremely comfortable in my own skin.
