WHAT MADE YOU ATTEND YOUR HBCU?
A Family Tradition!
My educational journey has been a unique one. From elementary school through high school, I found myself in institutions where the African-American student population was a small fraction. The real turning point happened when my sister received a scholarship to Howard University. My first visit to that campus was nothing short of astonishing. It was a place where I felt an immediate connection, like a second home.
But, as much as I longed to attend Howard, I couldn’t bear the thought of being so far away from home and enduring the biting cold of the climate. So, I made a choice that brought me closer to my family and familiar surroundings. I decided to attend Grambling State University in Louisiana, a decision that would become a significant chapter in our family’s tradition.
WHAT DID YOU LEARN DURING YOUR TIME A YOUR COLLEGE?
During my time at college, where I was deeply immersed in the worlds of accounting and pre-law, I discovered that education is not just about textbooks and exams; it’s a profound journey of personal growth.
1. Growing Up: College taught me responsibility and decision-making, marking my transition into adulthood.
2. Sharing: I embraced diversity and the importance of sharing experiences with peers from various backgrounds.
3. Sisterhood: I found lifelong friends who provided unwavering support and camaraderie.
4. Creativity: Accounting and pre-law unexpectedly nurtured my problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
5. Survival Skills: Balancing academics, jobs, and activities showed me resilience and determination.
In essence, college was much more than just preparing for a career. It was a journey of self-discovery, forging connections, and embracing the invaluable life lessons that will shape my future. My accounting and pre-law studies were the foundation, but the real treasures were the lessons learned along the way.”
HOW DID YOUR HBCU EFFECT YOUR LIFE?
“Attending an HBCU was a life-changing experience. Beyond the academic curriculum, I learned vital life lessons. It was there that I grew from a young adult to a responsible, independent individual, thanks to the nurturing environment.
The diverse community at HBCU taught me the significance of sharing experiences with peers from various backgrounds. It was a lesson in unity and empathy.
The sense of sisterhood and camaraderie I found there was incredible. Lifelong friendships were formed, providing unwavering support through the challenges of academic life and beyond.
Surprisingly, my accounting and pre-law studies nurtured my problem-solving and critical thinking skills. I learned that creativity extends beyond the canvas; it’s a vital skill in various fields.
Balancing academics, part-time jobs, and extracurricular activities taught me resilience and determination, skills I still rely on today. This period was a rigorous training ground that prepared me for the real world.
Alongside these personal growth experiences, it’s essential to recognize the historical significance of HBCUs. These institutions were born out of necessity, providing education and opportunities for African Americans in a segregated past. They symbolize resilience and empowerment.
My journey through an HBCU has been about academic and personal growth and honoring the historical legacy of these institutions. I’m immensely grateful for the life lessons and historical significance that have enriched my life.”
