WHAT HBCU YOU ATTEND?

Paine College

WHAT MADE YOU ATTEND YOUR HBCU?

One of the primary reasons for choosing to attend an HBCU was the expectation of experiencing a more enriching student experience compared to a predominantly white institution (PWI). I was also privileged enough to receive a full scholarship. HBCUs are known for tailoring their educational approach to the unique needs of Black Americans, fostering a sense of safety and strong support. Being immersed in a community of fellow Black students all striving for excellence through a high quality inherently leads to an enhanced student experience. The HBCU I attended generally prepared me for a better life.
Additionally, attending an HBCU provides an opportunity to celebrate and learn about Black culture and true Black History. HBCUs will present the unvarnished and sometimes harsh truth of U.S. history. Since HBCUs have historically had non-white representations in positions of power, they are able to uniquely create environments that cater to the needs of black students to be brought to the forefront of society. Though HBCUs are black colleges, I wanted to attend one for the diversity. I was able to be exposed to diversity by having classmates and professors that came from different backgrounds, cultures, races, and sexual orientations.

WHAT DID YOU LEARN DURING YOUR TIME A YOUR COLLEGE?

In addition to the essential knowledge needed to earn a degree in Mass Communications, my time at my HBCU provided me with valuable insights. I came to understand the significance of community, as well as the chance to align my personal values and principles with the black culture’s core values. I discovered opportunities that were tailored for individuals like myself, which I might not have encountered had I chosen a PWI. While at my HBCU, networking became second nature, and felt like I had an extended family by meeting successful professionals such as professors, alumni, and students.

HOW DID YOUR HBCU EFFECT YOUR LIFE?

Paine College provided a unique environment for self-discovery and deep introspection. It was instrumental in developing my leadership skills, equipping me to face the world with confidence. My time at Paine enhanced my social awareness and enlightened me about the experiences of other black students.
Reflecting back, I appreciate the seemingly strict rules, dress codes, mandatory chapel attendance, and inclusive curriculum. These elements were instrumental in shaping me into the independent thinker, well-spoken, and well-dressed Black woman that I am today.

HOW DID YOUR HBCU EFFECT YOUR LIFE?

Since leaving college, I have established my own law firm, KIN Family Law. I have passionately dedicated my efforts to advocacy for domestic violence victims, assisting over 200 women and children who have been affected by domestic violence situations. I have been successful in assisting men and women in domestic violence situations by representing them in court for protection from abuse orders and divorces.

HOW DID YOUR HBCU EFFECT YOUR LIFE?

Growing up watching the Cosby Show, I was deeply impressed by Clair Huxtable, portrayed by Phylicia Rashad. She seemed to have it all together, balancing a successful career, being a wife and a mother, and, most importantly, she was black! She was, if not the only one, female black attorney on television. This served as my initial introduction to the field of law.
Over time my desire to assist others, especially those who could not advocate for themselves, grew. I wanted to contribute to improving the underrepresentation of Black female attorneys and make a meaningful difference in people’s lives, this is why I aspired to practice law.

WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE OTHER YOUNG ATTORNEYS?

Here is some advice I would offer to young attorneys:
1. Treasure your relationship with mentors, but also strive for independence.
2. Make a conscious effort to establish and maintain a work-life balance.
3. Understand that it’s perfectly normal to feel nervous at times, especially early in your career.
4. Build and nurture your referral sources early on; these connections are invaluable for your professional growth.

WHAT IS NEXT FOR YOU WITH IN 5 YEARS?

In the upcoming five years, I envision the expansion and substantial growth of the law firm, as well as becoming a celebrate divorce attorney.
