WHAT HBCU YOU ATTEND?
Florida A&M University
WHAT MADE YOU ATTEND THAT HBCU?
I’m originally from Indiana where there are no Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Early in high school, I only heard of Clark Atlanta and that was where I initially wanted to attend to experience the HBCU culture. However, an organization, in my hometown, took a group of students on a college tour to a few HBCUs, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) being one of them. The minute I stepped foot onto FAMU’s campus, I knew that FAMU was where I needed to be. When we met with current students, faculty, and staff, they spoke about the university with such high regard that it further built my anticipation. I wanted to major in broadcast journalism, so I researched to ensure that it offered that program. I was excited to learn that FAMU had a reputation as having one of the top journalism schools in the United States, and just a few years earlier was Time-Princeton Review “College of the Year.” To put the icing on the cake, the weather, campus, and landscaping were absolutely beautiful. I could not pass up the opportunity to attend this prestigious university.
WHAT DID YOU LEARN DURING YOUR TIME A YOUR COLLEGE?
I learned how to take care of business, problem solve, manage time, and build relationships. Since I was almost 1,000 miles away from my family, I quickly learned how to resolve financial aid, housing, and registration issues, which translated to business skills that I apply today. I learned the importance of “the follow up,” writing down names, phone numbers, and emails to get things done. I learned the adult way of balancing schoolwork, employment, church, extra-curricular activities, family, friends, and party life! I built relationships with some professors who became my professional mentors, and students, who became my network, some of whom became my life-long friends.
WHAT IS YOUR INSPIRATION?
My inspirations are my mother, the people in my community, and the vision that God gave me to give back to them. Knowing that God entrusts me with His people and His vision is very humbling and surreal.
WHAT DO YOU SEE YOURSELF DOING 10 YEARS FROM NOW?
Ten years from now, I see myself running my nationally known, seven-figure businesses: LCR Legal; beauty conglomerate, Kalon Karisma Hair and Beauty; and non-profit, The Love, Compassion and Resolve Project. I also see myself influencing and creating laws that affect black and brown people, building businesses to build The Kingdom, and being a six-figure giver to my church and philanthropic causes all while dedicating my time and resources to ministry, family, friends, and travel!
