WHAT HBCU YOU ATTEND?

Bowie State University

WHAT MADE YOU ATTEND YOUR HBCU?

I grew up attending numerous HBCU homecomings when my sister attended Hampton University. It was truly a family affair that the entire family looked forward to attending each year. We packed up the car, with care packages for my sister, and were excited about the football game and seeing the marching band. An HBCU homecoming is like a family reunion that I was excited to go to every year. I remember seeing my sister and her friends truly embracing and enjoying college life. She enjoyed her classes and the relationship she had with her professor who cared about her academic success. The HBCU community that nurtured and supported my sister not only academically, but personally and professionally was what I wanted for myself. I am among the many HBCU graduates that continue to enrich the lives of the world.

WHAT DID YOU LEARN DURING YOUR TIME A YOUR COLLEGE?

There were so many life lessons I learned during my college time. Time management, organization, and being self-motivated are just three skills that I learned in college that have been beneficial in my personal and professional life. I also learned and saw the value of community. When I thought I was alone or needed some encouragement, my community, whether it was a professor, classmate, friend, line sister, etc. was there for me. Lastly, I learned that I, Dr. Joi L. Brown, could inspire and impact the world with my gifts and talents. My gifts and talents were encouraged and celebrated during my college experience, and I learned the value that I bring to this world.

HOW DID YOUR HBCU EFFECT YOUR LIFE?

My HBCU experience educated, equipped, and empowered me to be the woman I am today. My journey from HR Intern to HR Director is a testament to how my HBCU experience changed the trajectory of my life. I am blessed to be able to teach future HR Practitioners in a field that I have literally grown up. Being an Adjunct Professor at my alma mater is truly an HBCU success story. I inspire students, HR Practitioners, and others with my story which is grounded on my HBCU experience at Bowie State University.
