WHAT HBCU DID YOU ATTEND?
Stillman College
WHAT MADE YOU ATTEND YOUR HBCU?
I come from a family of HBCU graduates and I wanted to attend an HBCU that was outside of my hometown, but not too far from home. My parents had me construct a matrix chart that incorporated several schools that I had received an offer letter from and included the primary requirements of what I was looking for in my HBCU. This consisted of location of the school, if the school offered the major that I wanted to pursue, and fun fact: Whether or not the campus had active Deltas on the yard. While in high school, I attended the high school orientation day at Stillman with my parents and auditioned on the spot for a music scholarship in the music department and shortly there after, I was offered a full music scholarship and later an academic scholarship.
WHAT DID YOU LEARN DURING YOUR TIME A YOUR COLLEGE?
I learned time management skills as a student navigating campus life as well as my academic studies. I learned that the it is important to build a positive and professional rapport with my professors and faculty and staff as I matriculated in my studies at Stillman and that often times the relationships you build in college can be lifelong. As a student, it seemed like school would take forever, but my four years, in hind sight, appeared to pass by relatively fast as I have graduated from Stillman 18 years ago this year! It is import ant to stay on top of your academic studies, many people who knew me in college, knew that they could generally find me in the library studying as it was my second home! lol.
WHAT WAS YOUR DECISION TO PLEDGE DELTA SIGMA THETA SORORITY INC?
I chose Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. because many members of my family are members of Greek letter organizations. Growing up, I was a member of Delteen with the Huntsville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. which I currently am now a member of as a Delta. Delta, to me exemplified strength, sisterhood, professionalism, scholastic achievement, success, and community service which aligned with who I am as a person. I knew I wanted to be a Delta ever since I was a little girl. For me, It was Delta, or nothing at all!
HOW DID YOUR HBCU EFFECT YOUR LIFE?
It taught me to have a significant appreciation for HBCUs given the history and success of African Americans in higher education. When I was a student At Stillman College, it provided a sense of pride, prestige and community where generally everyone knew each other on campus especially if you were actively involved in the campus life like I was. I sang Alto as a member of the world renowned Stillman College Tour Choir where we traveled the United States and Abroad. I also served as the Senior Senator of the Student Government Association (SGA), Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE), I was the president of Sigma Beta Delta International Honor Society for business, management, and administration. I also was a member of the UNCF Pre-Alumni Council, a Non Greek organization in addition to pledging the Epsilon Eta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. before graduating Stillman College just to name a few.
SHARE 3 OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL THINGS YOU HAVE DONE SINCE LEAVING COLLEGE?
1. Thankfully, before I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Stillman College, I had a job waiting for me in my career field of Business that I am working in to this day for 20 years this year!
Secondly, I am also grateful to have earned a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Texas A&M University- Texarkana the following year, while living in Texas. Lastly, I am so grateful to have earned my real estate license and have earned my Associate Broker’s license and have the opportunity to help many other aspiring agents get their real estate license.
WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE A YOUNG DELTA SIGMA THETA?
I would share with a young Delta that is about to graduate college, is to keep God first in all of your endeavors, ensure that you graduate, and wherever she goes, always connect with a local alumnae chapter as it has been beneficial to me in my life as I have always joined the local alumnae chapter no matter where I’ve lived throughout my career and life. I would encourage her to remember the core principles of Delta and continue to strive to uphold them wherever she goes, and that our sisterhood is strong and to know that you can always find a soror somewhere in the community to connect with.
WHAT IS NEXT FOR YOU WITH IN 5 YEARS?
To continue to serve the community through mentorship and community service and to continue to expand my businesses and to continue to help others achieve their personal and professional goals in life and real estate.
