Valorie Lawson co-anchors the 5, 6 and 10 p.m. news. The veteran journalist has more than 20 years experience in television and radio broadcasting. Valorie is a graduate of Alabama A&M University. Although she was born in Demopolis, Alabama, she considers Huntsville, Alabama, home. Her family moved to the Rocket City when she was six years old. That is where she grew up with her brother, two sisters and a nephew. Valorie began her career in broadcasting in Huntsville in radio as a reporter/anchor. She spent a year at WEUP-FM and two years at WAHR-FM. Her career in radio later led to a shot in television news when she auditioned at WHNT-TV in Huntsville. She was hired as a reporter and after only a few short years in that position she was promoted to anchor of the 5:00 pm newscast. From Huntsville it was on to Birmingham and WBMG-TV as the 5:00 pm anchor. After that she headed to WREG-TV in Memphis, Tennessee, as the weekend morning anchor. But, Valorie’s heart was in Alabama so she returned to Birmingham to become the weekend anchor at Alabama’s ABC 33/40. After seven years, she announced she was leaving the Magic City for the state’s capital city and WSFA 12. While in Birmingham, Valorie was recognized by Mayor Bernard Kincaid and the Birmingham City Council for her work covering city politics. Valorie has also been recognized by the National Association of Black Journalist for stories on Alabama’s Blackbelt and Alabama’s Civil Rights Foot Soldiers. In her spare time, Valorie enjoys speaking to civic groups, serving on various boards and spending time with her husband Corey and stepson C.J. Valorie wants to know how she and WSFA 12 can better serve the viewers of central Alabama. Please feel free to contact her with story tips and information.
