WHAT MADE YOU ATTEND YOUR HBCU?
My family has a rich history of attending Alabama A&M University (AAMU). Not only was I eager follow in their footsteps, but the story of AAMU’s brave founder, William Hooper Councill, illustrated a story of audacity and resilience that I wanted to continue to learn as I progressed in my educational career. Alabama A&M University presented itself as a nurturing environment, that would properly prepare me to adequately transition into any profession or professional school upon graduation. I can confidently say, I was not disappointed.
WHAT DID YOU LEARN DURING YOUR TIME A YOUR COLLEGE?
Alabama A&M University taught me the importance of using the knowledge I gained in the classroom to build community. As a Political Science major, I learned the importance of using politics and the law to better the next person’s circumstance. Alabama A&M also taught me the importance of recognizing your value in any space. I truly believe my education from Alabama A&M allows me the opportunity to make a positive impact and contribution in any space I enter.
HOW DID YOUR HBCU EFFECT YOUR LIFE?
I can easily look at my life and see the positive effects attending Alabama A&M University has had. Not only did attending Alabama A&M provide me with a strong educational foundation, but attending AAMU has afforded me lifelong bonds, friendships and amazing networking opportunities. When I meet fellow alums of AAMU I never feel like I’m meeting a stranger. There is always an instant familial connection that happens that is unmatched. AAMU has produced thousands of graduates who occupy every corner of every profession. I don’t have to look far to find a graduate of AAMU that is not willing to extend a helping hand. Knowing that, furthers my confidence in knowing there is a community out there for me that understands me. Attending AAMU was one of the most empowering decisions I have ever made. I use the tools I gained in my time as a student there daily and continue to spread its influence.
HOW DID YOUR HBCU EFFECT YOUR LIFE?
After leaving Alabama A&M University, I received my Juris Doctor J.D. from Southern University Law Center, I was admitted to the Alabama State Bar and went into solo practice, by starting my own law firm, The Law Office of X.T. Nelson , located in Birmingham Alabama.
HOW DID YOUR HBCU EFFECT YOUR LIFE?
Growing up, I did not know a lot of lawyers. However, the idea of being a lawyer was always intriguing to me and became my dream career as a child. I have always believed in the power of service. To me, practicing law is one of the best service careers to ever exist. To the average person, law and procedure may as well be a different language due to its complex nature. It was my goal to learn to decipher that language and present in a way that can not only be understood, but to solve problems. Law brought what I learned at Alabama A&M University full circle. Becoming an attorney would grant me the opportunity to better the next person’s circumstance.
WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE OTHER YOUNG ATTORNEYS?
My advice to other young attorneys would be to trust in your ability to figure it out. I learn something new everyday and it fuels me to learn even more. You can’t be great without messing up. It is a part of the process.
WHAT IS NEXT FOR YOU WITH IN 5 YEARS?
In the next five years I will still be advocating for my clients and educating them on their rights. Although my firm serves Birmingham and surrounding areas, I am looking to expand my firm’s services and advocacy across state lines. There is a lot more in store. Stay tuned!
